How do you clean gold jewelry?
With gold, it does not matter how high the fineness of the jewelry, or the carat, is, because gold does not oxidize like other precious metals. It is true that gold can scratch, but this can be solved by having the jewelry polished.
Gold jewelry can lose its sparkle, often due to residues of creams, skin oils and dust, for example. This is very normal and can be easily remedied. To make your jewelry sparkle again, you can always visit the store and we can arrange this. You can also choose to clean the gold jewelry yourself. We have listed a number of things that you can, and perhaps more importantly, that you cannot use for cleaning.
Gold ring gives off black?
The shedding of a gold ring, which leaves black on the skin, can be caused by the acidity of your skin. This discoloration is not harmful or bad for your skin, but simply a reaction between the gold and the acidity of the skin. Acidity can change due to antibiotics, medications, wearing certain perfumes or cosmetics, or even other factors. The black discoloration can easily be removed with soap and water. Sometimes it can happen that people wear the same gold ring for years without any problems, but recently it has started to peel, which may indicate a recent change in the acidity of the skin.
Cleaning gold jewelry at home
Of course, you can also clean your jewelry yourself if you prefer. However, it is important to do this correctly to prevent damage to your jewelry. Also keep in mind that higher carat gold jewelry is more fragile and therefore needs to be cleaned carefully.
The safest and most effective way to clean your gold jewelry yourself is with soap and water. Here's a simple method:
- 1. Make soapy water with a little Triangle soap or Dreft and lukewarm water.
- 2. Let the jewelry soak in the soapy water for a few minutes.
- 3. Remove the jewelry from the soapy water and gently wipe it clean with a cotton cloth or use a soft toothbrush.
- 4. Rinse the jewelry with lukewarm water.
- 5. Dry the jewelry with a flannel cloth and your gold jewelry will shine beautifully again!
It is important not to use the methods below to clean your gold jewelry:
- Cleaning jewelry with vinegar: This is too aggressive and can damage the gold.
- Cleaning jewelry with baking soda: It is abrasive and can cause scratches.
- Cleaning jewelry with cola: Too aggressive and affects the gold.
- Cleaning jewelry with beer: This can damage the jewelry and is more expensive than using soapy water.
Our advice is to visit the store or use the soap and water method as explained above. It would be a shame if you damaged your beautiful gold jewelry in an attempt to make it shine.
How do we clean your gold jewelry?
If you choose to have your gold jewelry cleaned by us, we will ensure that the jewelry shines again down to the last detail. We usually use an ultrasonic bath. This machine works by means of vibrations and high vibrations, in combination with water and (special) soap that is heated. In this way, skin oils and other contamination are loosened from the jewelry. Jewelry with brilliants is also placed in these ultrasonic baths to clean them thoroughly.
However, it is important to mention that not all gold jewelry is suitable for cleaning in the ultrasonic bath. Jewelry with amorphous stones (soft/fragile stones) such as red corals, pearls, etc., should not be placed in the ultrasonic bath. These stones are too fragile and can lose their shine or be damaged by cleaning in the ultrasonic bath.
Polishing gold jewelry
Over time, gold jewelry can lose its shine due to frequent wear. If you want your gold jewelry to shine again like the day you bought it, it can be polished by our goldsmith. Our goldsmith knows exactly which jewelry and stones need to be cleaned and how, so your jewelry is in good hands. Gold does not oxidize, so polishing ensures that your jewelry is free from scratches and looks like new again.
How do I get rid of scratches on my gold jewelry?
Minor damage or scratches can occur while wearing jewelry. If this happens to you, you can bring the jewelry to our studio and we can polish it for you. Since gold does not oxidize, oxidation is not a reason to polish your jewelry. Our goldsmith uses a paste to polish this gold jewelry and remove all deep scratches, so that the gold is smooth and undamaged again.
