Skeleton Watches
In 2018, the worldwide trend was transparent, from shoes to luggage everything had to be transparent. So you could say that the Frenchman André-Charles Caron was way ahead of his time when he invented the "skeleton watch" around 1760. Caron's creation removed all the display windows from a timepiece and instead left a clear view of the timepiece. Caron's invention is now known as a visible mechanism watch or a skeleton watch.
Like a flashy Ferrari or Lamborghini with a see-through window revealing the engine, a skeleton watch offers a glimpse into the watch's equivalent: the timepiece. The idea is the same in both cases: to drool over the powerful and ultra-modern technology behind a luxury item.
Although the skeleton watch was first invented in the 18th century, the style didn't really become popular until more than 200 years later. When easy-to-make and highly accurate quartz watches started demanding the lunch money of Swiss luxury watchmakers, the Swiss fought back with style and craftsmanship. The skeleton watch - with that dial exposing all the intricate inner workings was ample and visible evidence of a luxurious watch. When the market was flooded with quartz timepieces, the visible movement watch became a way for collectors to demonstrate the superiority of their piece.
Different types of skeleton watches
What is the difference between a watch with visible mechanism, skeleton watches and open heart watches? For many watch enthusiasts, a true skeleton watch is a watch whose plates and bridges are decorated with intricate patterns and designs. It is this decoration that distinguishes skeleton watches from watches with a partially visible mechanism.
Most watches with visible mechanisms often have only partially visible movements, but they lack the details that real skeleton watches have. It is important to note that partially refinished watches and skeleton watches are often lumped together and called skeleton watches.
If you're concerned that removing too much of the dial will be difficult to read or too eye-catching, look into Open Heart watches. These are mechanical watches with a small hole in the dial, revealing the balance inside. Open heart watches allow you to see the actual heart of the watch without sacrificing the design and decoration often found on a dial.
