The Water Resistance of Watches
The water resistance of a watch indicates to what extent the watch is resistant to water. This water resistance is often indicated in meters, BAR or ATM (atmospheres), which has to do with the air pressure and atmosphere. The different levels of waterproofing are explained below:
All these different terms can occasionally cause some confusion. We understand that all too well. Fortunately, we have written the article below to provide more clarity. A waterproof watch must be properly maintained. We conclude this article with some useful tips to keep watches as water resistant as possible.
-
Water Resistant - This means that the watch is only splash-proof and is not suitable for swimming or showering.
-
30 meters / 3 ATM / 3 BAR - Resistant to small amounts of water, such as when washing hands.
-
50 meters / 5 ATM / 5 BAR - Waterproof while showering.
-
100 meters / 10 ATM / 10 BAR - Waterproof while swimming.
-
200 meters / 20 ATM / 20 BAR - Waterproof while diving.
-
1000 meters / 100 ATM / 100 BAR - Waterproof during deep sea diving.
It is important to note that watches labeled only as "Water Resistant" are splash resistant only and are not suitable for swimming or showering. The higher the number of ATM, BAR or meters on the watch, the more suitable it is for prolonged contact with water.
